Last Months Meeting Highlights:
Ann Fairbrother brought up the issue of potential ground water contamination at the former Benton Auto Wreckers site. Sandra Coveny volunteered (with Ann's help) to draft a letter to the Benton County Commissioners asking for information on progress in the assessment and cleanup of the problem. Tom Thompson and Ann Fairbrother volunteered to attend meetings where this water contamination problem is discussed and report back to the Mary's River Watershed Council.
Steering Committee Recommendations:
- The Steering Committee discussed how to advertise for and choose a watershed consultant. A
short advertisement will be run in the Corvallis Gazette Times and on several websites which reference the MRWC. Timing of the ad and selection process are under discussion.
- The Steering Committee also suggested that more discussion needs to take place regarding the entire election process for the MRWC.
- The Steering Committee recommended that a checking account be opened for the MRWC. This recommendation was approved by consensus with a quorum present.
- There will be no May meeting for the Steering Committee.
- A logo proposed by Sandra Coveny for the MRWC met with the approval of the Steering Committee.
The main speaker for this meeting was Louise Solliday, the
Governor's watershed advisor. Ms. Solliday discussed the status of the Memorandum Of Agreement (MOA) between the State and the NMFS, the process of modifying the forest practices act, the status of industry funding of watershed improvements, as well as the status of listing for evolutionary significant units of various northwest anadromous fish species. She then answered questions posed by council members.
